Why do certain personality types have a hard time losing weight? A new study from the American Psychological Association suggests some answers. The study says people who are highly neurotic and have low levels of conscientiousness are most likely to gain weight as they get older no matter what diet plan they use.
The study, published by the American Psychological Association, found that impulsivity is the strongest predictor of who becomes overweight. The researchers from the National Institute on Aging looked at data from a longitudinal study of nearly 2,000 people who were generally healthy and well-educated called the Baltimore Longitudinal Study of Aging.
Though most put on some weight they got older, those who scored highest on assessments of impulsivity and risk-taking tended to gain the most weight. Other personality traits that led to weight gain included cynicism, competitiveness and aggressiveness.
On the other hand, people who were conscientious tended to stay lean.
I’d love to see someone take this information and turn it into a diet plan. The Personality Diet sounds like a winner to me!
