Research studies regarding toenail fungus and treatment

In 2007, a study investigated people having toenail fungus. Researchers started their study on March 2007 where their compared some medical or Toenail Fungus treatments of the condition to find which is better. They found that ciclopiroxolamine and butenafine, an active ingredient in topical medication for onychomycosis, have significant efficacy when used for at least a year. When researchers compared topical ciclopiroxolamine with amorolfine, a component present in some nail lacquers, they found that the latter is more effective in managing the symptoms of the disease.

A randomized study also in 2007 examined about 250 patients to find effects oral medications and topical applications. Researchers found that by combining topical treatment using amorolfine nail lacquer with the oral drug treatment having terbinafine medication patients were cured faster and have better results than by using only the oral treatment.

Another study in 2007 showed that debridement of the nails along with taking oral medication terbinafine could boost significantly the recovery of patients from the disease.

A 2004 study showed that by combining ciclopirox nail paint with topical urea cream could produce better results in the treatment of toenail fungus.

Most of the developments and technology for the treatment of the condition today focused in discovering new drugs that could manage the fungal infection more effectively and finding better ways or method of introducing these drugs to the disease-affected site. Hopefully in the near future, researchers could provide better treatments with faster method, safer way, and less costly for managing the disease.
