By the end of the day, I’m walking on water

7.50am

I hit the snooze button and then get out of bed 10 minutes later.

I’m a bit of an ‘Ireland AM’ addict and so the TV gets switched on and I listen to the show as I move about getting ready. I start sipping a pint glass of tap water, which I finish before breakfast.

8.45am

I have a cup of tea with soya milk. I’ve been having problems with my sinuses and have decided to eliminate milk to see if that helps. I have a bowl of raspberries and strawberries as well as a slice of toasted rye bread with butter. I’d normally have porridge.

11am

On my way to the office, I grab an americano from Café di Napoli. I go through emails after the weekend and then get started on some administrative work. My aim is to drink between three and four pints of water a day and by late morning I’m nearly finished with my second one.

1pm

I tend to have lunch at my desk. Today I have brought in homemade tomato and basil soup. I have it with a couple of Nairn’s organic oatcakes. I also have a banana, the only fruit I actually like.

3.45pm

After my 3pm meeting, I go and get another take-away americano. I will have finished my third pint of water by the time I’m ready to leave the office.

My work with the KBC Music in Great Irish Houses festival and with the Royal Irish Academy of Music often means I must do late nights but I’ve become much more disciplined and tend to plan what I eat. I’ll either bring something with me or arrange to eat a healthy meal out.

This evening, I’m going to a concert being given by my good friend, pianist Hugh Tinney. Before the performance, I meet a friend and we go downstairs in Fallon & Byrne where I have tomato-based fish stew with a gorgeous small baguette and a glass of wine. I also have some water.

10.30pm

A group of us go with Hugh to celebrate at a local hotel. I have a glass of wine and we all chat.

11.30pm

I take a taxi home.

Midnight

Once I’m home, I have a glass of water and then go to bed and read for about 15 minutes.

Ciara Higgins is the artistic director of the KBC Music in Great Irish Houses festival, which takes place June 12-19
