A basic cholesterol test (or lipid panel) reveals a few things: your total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, HDL cholesterol and triglycerides. And if your LDL is high, and/or your HDL is low, your doctor will want you to do something about it, and will likely prescribe a statin drug. But it seems that not all LDL and HDL are created equal—there are different sizes, and different types, and some are more dangerous than others.

Although the VAP still isn’t used on the general population, it’s inexpensive and covered by most insurance companies and Medicare, so there’s no reason not to ask your doctor about it.  You can learn more about the VAP test on the website of the company that makes it, Atherotech.
